Rexburg, the seat of Madison County, is in the southeast corner of Idaho in
the Upper Snake River Valley. It sits at an elevation of 4,865 ft, to the east
are the Teton Mountains, and to the west is the Sawtooth Mountain Range.
It is on Highway 20 and
served by State Highway
33 near I-15. It is close to the west
entrance of Yellowstone National Park, 28 miles north of
Idaho
Falls.
In its beginning, Rexburg was sparsely settled with only a few fur trappers
and an occasional cattle operation. Interest in the area grew in 1879 when John
Poole spent time hunting around Menan while employed by the Utah Northern
Railroad. Poole returned to Utah and told of the good farmland.
